together as one; team building;
I have a Bachelors degree from Yeshiva University and a Masters degree in Early Childhood Education from Hunter College. I have more than ten years of experience as a classroom teacher and an additional ten years of experience as director of Camp Ashreinu.
Not long ago, our daughter told us she did not want to go to sleep away camp. We inquired about different options for her and found that there were not many options for that "tween age" bracket. She was too young to work as a counselor in camp (yes, not even nepotism could land her a job at that age!) and too old to go to day camp. What were we going to do?
My husband Chaim challenged me on a long drive home from a family simcha in Montreal. He said “you already run a wonderful program for little ones, why don’t you create one for older girls?” We brainstormed ideas of what would be age appropriate. The core of the program had to include daily tefillah, chessed activities, shiurim given by warm, experienced counselors or guest speakers, and a variety of activities that would keep the girls active and appeal to their creative side. And that was how Camp Cool-anu came to be.
I am excited to announce that Camp Cool-anu -- a day camp program for girls, ages 10 to12 – has a spectacular program planned for the coming summer of 2015.
Location: The camp will be based at Congregation Beth Shalom in Teaneck on the corner of Maitland and Rugby.
We will have 2 three week sessions.
The second session will begin on Monday, July 27, 2015 and will end on Friday August 14, 2015.
Daily Schedule: Camp will begin each day at 9 am and will end at 4 pm.
Staff: We will have one Head Counselor and one JC/CIT for a group of approximately fifteen girls per group.
Sports Activities: We offer a sports program, including hip hop, Zumba, creative movement, yoga, swimming, hiking and rollerblading, to name a few.
Creative Arts: On the creative side, we bring in different programs including film-making, culinary arts, cake and cookie decorating, sewing, jewelry making, and wood working. Each summer we have added new specialties.
Trips: We will take the girls on a local trip at least once a week and a bit farther once per session. This past summer we went kayaking, on a scavenger hunt and on a ropes course.
Jewish Content: We will begin each day with tefillah. We will also have a brief chinuch program each day, led by the Head Counselor or, on occasion, a guest speaker. In the past we have also had the girls participate in a chessed activity.
Because we are located in a shul, and we will have tefillah and chinuch, the girls will be required to come to camp in appropriate attire, i.e., a shirt with a sleeve and a skirt. However, they will be permitted to change into long shorts or sweatpants for sports activities.
Fees: The fee for each three week session will be $1150. Campers must be signed up for a minimum of two consecutive weeks. The fee for two weeks will be $900.
Full payment is due by May 15, 2015, and is
